LaPiS: Pearly SHELLS

May 31, 2009 · 9 Comments

I’ve always been a fan of sea crustaceans and with shrimps and prawns being the more “accessible” ones, it comes as no surprise that these usually find a place on our table.

Despite the supposed ease in cooking these sea yummies, however, I somehow still can’t perfect the ”art” of making the flavor seep beyond the shells (*sigh*).

As they say, try and try until you succeed…   And I’m doing  just that! ;)

Here’s my take on the oh-so-familiar prawn dishes that are bound to land on many Pinoys’ lunch and dinner tables…

Go a little bit fancy…

…or stick to the basics…

…and pair either with steamed white rice and this…

One thing’s for sure though … mapapa-hula (to the tune of “Pearly Shells”, of course!) ka sa sarap – hahaha!

And here’s to a Super Sunday to all!

LaPiS: Fluffy

May 27, 2009 · 8 Comments

Almost did not have an entry for this week’s theme.  Good thing I was “cordially invited” to witness this special event…

NEWS FLASH!!! KITTY HAS TEA WITH THE PRINCESS!!!

What else could they be having with their tea?

Why, fluffy, pink and white marshmallows, of course!

And  did I mention there was another guest to the party?

Who else but our  ”resident Diva-lette” , HRH Princess Marga of the Kingdom of the Sand!

A belated fluffy LaPiS to all!

Top of mind choice for this week’s entry?

Definitely pizza. :D

And as an “afterthought”, check out what I prepared for dinner tonight… (more details in my later post ;) )

Yummy sushi slices!

Shabu-Shabu

May 14, 2009 · 2 Comments

Ever since I chanced upon this dish on co-DFS wifey Red’s site, I was raring to give it a “test drive” in my own kitchen…

So today, with Red’s recipe in hand (which I tweaked a bit here and there given the ingredients which were available to me), it was green-and-go for my first shabu-shabu cooking adventure – yipee!

And, I’m pleased to say, the result was delicious!  Even our two-year-old had seconds.

Here’s a peek at how it turned out…

And for anyone who may be interested, here’s what went into my shabu-shabu version.

YOU NEED: 10 pcs crabsticks (halved), 15 pcs homemade shrimp-fish balls (thanks to Munchkin Mommy for the recipe!), 2 small heads of brocolli, two handfuls of dried shiitake mushrooms (soaked in water for 15 minutes prior to cooking and then squeezed dry), one medium tomato (sliced into wedges)

FOR THE BROTH: 6 cups seasoned (with salt and pepper) chicken broth (this one I again made from scratch), 9 tsps rice vinegar, 9 tsps Kikkoman soy sauce, 2 cloves garlic (minced), 4 stalks celery (sliced diagonally – about an inch long), half a white onion bulb (sliced)

HOW TO: Put all ingredients for broth together and bring to rolling boil in a saucepan. Put in crabsticks and seafood balls and cook for about 5 minutes.  Reduce heat and put the rest of the vegetables in and cook for about 3 minutes.  Serve hot in bowls and enjoy!

Thanks very much again Red for this wonderful find of a dish! Here’s looking forward to sharing and swapping more yummy recipes with you. ;)

LaPiS: Shades of Spring and Summer

May 4, 2009 · 9 Comments

A hearty beach picnic…long, tall and refreshing drinks…plump, juicy fruits…freshly-picked vegetables…

These are the usual images that come to my mind whenever I think “spring and summer foodie thoughts” :)

And I think these photos will give you an inkling of what I mean… ;)

It’s a bit ironic though that I actually took a photo of these veggies during winter – hahaha!

I would’ve preferred taking a photo of the salad sans the fresh orange juice so that the cut-up fruits (in this case, I used gala apples, bananas, mandarin orange wedges and strawberries) would be more visible…   Was supposed to do a “re-take” of this but couldn’t – since strawberries were unfortunately not available during my last trip to the grocery (*sigh*).  Anyway, I found that this is one delicious way of making the kids eat fruits – and a variety of it, to boot! ;) Incidentally, bet you’d never guess where I got this recipe? While watching a presenter introduce the next show in  BBC’s Cee-Beebies - hahaha!

Pardon the delayed post since I’ve been having some trouble uploading pics to this site lately… :(

A belated happy LaPiS to all! :D
